The aim of the intervention was to create a monument capable of enhancing the role and image of the Albanian capital. The new system allowed to increase the capacity and to cover every order of place, respecting the symbolic role of the original structure within the city: the urban design by Armando Brasini, later developed by Gherardo Bosio, was therefore maintained and it was carried out a disassembly and a philological reconstruction of the monumental façade of the authority stand, keeping it as access to the VIP areas of the stadium.
The structure – consisting of a rectangle with rounded corners, with eight faces that allow distinct accesses to each function – is inspired by the shapes of the Roman Theatre, where the stands are the cavea and the fourth side represents the large scaenae frons.
The intervention includes a 100-meter tower used as a hotel, which takes on a symbolic and perceptive value, making the stadium visible from a long distance and placing itself as a privileged observation point over the city. The covering is characterized by the red and black colours that recall those of the national flag.
The mixed technology in steel and concrete allows to minimize the encumbrance of the vertical structural elements to the advantage of the commercial areas and the facades, which develop on a total of 30,000 square meters, are surrounded by brise-soleil columns and decorated in bas-relief with a pattern inspired from the fabric of traditional Albanian clothes and carpets.
